Types of Auto Trailers
People often use auto transport companies when they need to move a vehicle from one place to another. These companies have many different types of trailers, each kind made to suit the vehicle that it will be moving. The article below explains the different kind of auto trailers and what they are used for.
Two Main Types of Auto Transport Trailers
- Tractor Trailers Trucks These trailers are able to carry many vehicles and are great choices for less expensive auto shipping. However, they are slow and cannot travel through residential areas without difficulty.
- Pick-Up Style Trucks These trailers are also called "hotshots" and they are the more expensive option. This is because they are able to travel faster than tractor trailers and are able to travel in residential areas.
Both of these types of trailers are available in open or enclosed varsities. That is another decision you will have to make if you choose to have your vehicle transport by trailer.
Open Trailer vs. Enclosed Trailer
- Open Auto Transport Trailer With this type of trailer, your vehicle will be exposed to the weather while it is being transported. This means that it is possible that your car may be damaged while it is being moved. That is why open auto trailers are cheaper than enclosed trailers.
- Enclosed Trailers If you choose this type of trailer, your car will be placed inside the trailer. The trailer provides the vehicle with protection against weather conditions. This type of transport is much more expensive than open trailer transport is. Some of these trailers have options such as lift gates for safely loading vehicle horizontally, ramp gates for vehicles with longer wheelbases, and winches for vehicles that cannot be operated.
Once you have decided whether you are going to use an open or enclosed trailer, you have to decide between a single-car trailer and a multi-car trailer.
Multi-Car vs. Single-Car
- Multi-Car Trailers If you select a multi-car trailer, it will most likely be an open transport. These trailers carry between three and twelve cars and will take more time. Since many other cars will be on the trailer, you must be sure to drop off and pick up your car on time. There are generally two racks of cars and you have to decide whether your car is on the top or the bottom of the transport. If your car is on the top, you risk damage from branches and trees, but if it is on the bottom, you risk having the cars on the top leak oil onto yours.
- Single-Car Trailer This option is usually chosen when the car needs to arrive somewhere quickly. Usually, this is an open trailer, but is as expensive as an enclosed trailer.
Flatbed Trailer
Another option for transporting vehicles is a flatbed trailer. This transport is generally used when a vehicle is too big for other transports or it has been modified. The cost of this transport option depends on how many vehicles are being moved.
