Types of Composite Lumber

Composite lumber is a synthetic product made from smaller pieces of wood that are combined using glue. Composite lumber is used as an alternative to natural wood due to its resistant structure. There are many types of composite lumber, which are prepared and processed differently to produce a difference effect.

Laminated Veneer Lumber

Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is a type of composite lumber made from many layers of lightweight wood and a bonding agent. This manmade wood is preferred over regular wood due to its resistance to warping and twisting. Veneer composite lumber is often used in homes for headers and beams.

Laminated Strand Lumber

Laminated strand lumber (LSL) is manufactured by using strips of flimsy wood that are pressed together. This category of composite lumber is environmental friendly because it comes from quick growing aspen and pinewoods. LSL is used in house construction to make floor joists and support beams.

Oriented Strand Lumber

Oriented strand lumber (OSL) is created using small dried strands of wood that are glued together before being pressed into large sheets. This lumber is very similar to LSL, but has longer wooden strands. This kind of wood is used for making wooden products that contain connectors and joints.
