Types of Computer Maintenance
Like any other machine, computers must receive various types of regularly scheduled maintenance to operate properly. By following a few routine tasks, such as physical maintenance, updating software and deleting old, unused files, you can keep your computer in top performance.
Hard Drive
All computers have a disk cleanup and defragmenting tool. A disk cleanup can be run daily to delete unused files. This frees up a computer's memory and hard drive space. Defragmenting a computer's hard drive moves stored files around to make more room on the hard drive. This type of maintenance should be performed weekly.
Updating Software
Computer systems will only run as smoothly as software allows it to. Updating the software on your computer regularly will remove older, outdated files and will replace them with newer versions. This can improve your computer's performance enormously because when software is outdated, it can cause a system to slow down or to create unwanted errors.
File Backup
Any hard drive files that are not used regularly should be moved to a flash drive or other backup source. After copying files, you can remove them from your computer's hard drive, freeing up additional space.
Spyware/Virus Scanning
Spyware and viruses are notorious for causing computer crashes, slowing down systems and creating errors. If you use your computer to access the Internet daily, spyware and antivirus software should be installed to scan all email and websites visited. Every time you visit a website, tracking cookies are applied to your computer's memory. While most tracking cookies are not harmful to computers, they do track a user’s activity and should be removed daily.
Dust Regularly
Dusting your computer regularly ensures all parts are able to function properly. Dust collects easily, especially on the keyboard and fan areas of your computer. Use a dusting tool and a can of compressed air to clean all crevasses and internal parts thoroughly.
