About Dressmaker Forms

Types of Dressmaker Forms

A common and useful tool used by professional and amateur dressmakers is the dress form. These shapes are made to represent the form of either men or women and helps the designer to get a view of the look and drape of the garment being created. There are different types of forms that are available and most can be purchased from craft, fabric or other sewing-related stores.

Adjustable Forms

Adjustable forms contain dials that allow you to make adjustments to its shape. These types of forms are suitable for people who are making clothing for various people of different sizes and heights. They are made in either plastic or foam, with plastic the least expensive and more mobile of the two. One of the benefits of foam or fabric forms is that you can pin directly onto it.

Non-Adjustable Forms

Non-adjustable body forms cannot be adjusted for different sizes and are purchased in one-size per form. If desired, non-adjustable body forms can be made to your measurements, although like the adjustable form it will not be an exact replica of your figure. They are suitable for creating clothes for one size only or many, if you have the resources to purchase several different sizes.

Homemade Forms

Forms can easily be made from home if you do not have the finances to buy a professionally made one. Although these are not professional in appearance or durability, they are functional and effective when you have no other options. One common method is to put on a t-shirt and wrap your upper body in duct or masking tape. You'll need someone to help you do the wrapping and to cut you out of the form, which you'll then stuff with foam.
