How Does Foot Surgery Affect Overall Health?

Types of Exercises After Foot Surgery

During the first couple weeks after you have foot surgery, you won't want to do any walking, nevermind any exercising. However, you will find yourself doing helpful exercises after a few weeks time. Exercising is very important in helping your recovery process move along quicker.

Swimming

You will not be able to swim right away after foot surgery. You will have to wait until your cast is off and your incisions are completely healed. The normal time for incisions to heal is about a month. If you get the wounds wet before they have time to heal completely, you risk the breakdown of the wounds which may lead to more serious issues. Light swimming is an excellent exercise choice for post-surgery. Water creates a very light, yet promising workout for your legs.

Water Exercises

Water exercises such as water aerobics can be done shortly after you have your foot surgery. Start by completing some basic water exercises and place a pull-buoy in between your legs. This will deter you from moving your legs too much. Be aware that most casts cannot get wet.

Exercise Bike

You can ride an exercise bike, but be sure it has low resistance. You can do this within a few weeks of having surgery. This is one of the best exercises you can do because not a lot of your weight is placed on your feet. Try not to overdo it on the exercise bike if you have an increased heart rate, as it will cause swelling of the foot that was operated on.
