Types of Garages

Nowadays, garages are used for a lot more than just for keeping your car when it is not in use. The type of garage you will probably want is depending on how you use your garage or if you even use it at all. There are several types of garages and it is important to learn about the differences to help you choose what type is best for your home.

Attached Garage

An attached garage is exactly what the name indicates; it is attached to the home. This is often referred to as the standard garage and most homes have their garage installed this way. An attached garage is built on the far left or far right of the home and can be viewed from the front. An attached garage is convenient for those who want quick access to their garage if they are in a rush to get to their car or if they are trying to avoid adverse weather. An attached garage has a big entry door in the front for car entry and a regular sized door in the back or side for those who are trying to enter from inside the home.

Detached Garage

A detached garage is not connected to the home but is near the home on the same property. It is usually placed to the front or back of the home, appears as another building and requires a short walk to get to. A detached garage is usually for those who are not in need of such a quick access as an attached garage would provide. It is also helpful for those who would prefer to use the garage as a storage unit, tool shed, recreation room or even a guesthouse.

Breezeway Garage

A breezeway garage can be considered the combination of both an attached garage and a detached garage. The 'breezeway' is the built connection between the garage and the house, which creates a walkway. The breezeway can serve as a carport or patio and, if a roof is attached, an extra room. The breezeway is good for those who do not want the garage directly attached to their home but don't want to have to walk outside to access their garage.

Garages come in different sizes. The standard sizing for residential garages are one car or two car. All three types of garages can be sized to the owner's liking. There are also different type of garage doors to choose from based on the garage's use and how the owner would like to enter. These include roller, sectional, up and over and swing hung doors.
