Types of Geriatric Exercise Routines
For people reaching the golden age of their lifetime or beginning their senior years, they will need to keep up with their bodies just the same as they have in the past. Geriatric exercise routines are less strenuous on the body but will help maintain flexibility and heart health.
Using Hand Weights
Never use large dumbbells or something that is over your weight limit. You will need to use something small but large enough to tell your body you are working it out. Using small hand weights and lifting them up gently to your chest and down again will increase your blood flow to the heart and pump up your chest muscles. It will increase your overall strength no matter how much weight is used. You should do this routine for at least 10 minutes a day to keep your muscle potency.
Yoga
Yoga is a wonderfully easy and calming exercise routine for geriatrics. You can either go to a yoga class to learn the basics or watch a yoga DVD and learn them from there. Yoga will increase your flexibility and muscle strength all in one. It is a series of long stretching routines that will make your muscles get used to being outstretched. It will also make different muscle areas of the body stronger.
Walking and Jogging
If you don’t have much time in your lifestyle, a brisk morning walk will keep you energized all day. Walk around your neighborhood for at least 10 minutes a day and it will keep your heart pounding and stable for the remainder of the day. You will increase your able to walk farther if you keep this up and you can eventually walk for 30 minutes to an hour, or start jogging around the block.
