Job Description of an Electrician Helper

Types of Hand Tools for an Electrician Helper

Electrician helpers need a variety of tools in order to perform their job properly. While an electrician helper does not need the same array of tools needed by an electrician, he does need to be prepared for any of dozens of different tasks. You can always add tools to your collection as they become necessary.

Tape Measure

Electrician helpers must measure a variety of different items. Whether it is wiring itself or distances from breaker boxes, those measurements must be exact. A retractable tape measure ensures that those measurements are accurate.

Screwdrivers

Flathead and Phillips-head screwdrivers are both invaluable for an electrician helper. Screwdrivers of multiple sizes can tackle any size screw.

Level

Whether installing lighting fixtures or outlets, a level helps an electrician helper make sure that the finished product is straight. Misaligned fixtures can mean the electrician loses both time and money going back to repair improperly installed items.

Pliers

Side-cutting pliers cut through cords and wires easily but can also be used to grip and turn wire when needed. Needle-nose pliers fit in small areas and help with securing fine wires.

Wire Strippers

Wire strippers are an essential tool for electrician helpers because the insulated plastic coating must be removed from the wire in order to make a strong connection. Although they look like pliers, wire cutters function differently.

Circuit Tester

Circuit testers can tell an electrician helper instantly if a wire or outlet is live or disconnected. These tools also test the amperage of wiring once it is installed.
