Types of Hardware for Security Doors
Security doors are a great start to protecting yourself and your valuables; consider taking them a step further. Additional types of hardware for security doors can enhance security door protection. Knowing that you have additional options such as dead bolts, door chains, strike plates and peep holes can make you feel protected and make it more difficult for intruders to enter your home or business.
Dead Bolts
Use dead bolts on security doors for a strong defense. Shop for those labeled "maximum security". Dead bolt locks should be mounted on exterior doors without screws showing on the door from the outside. A bolt with a minimum size of one inch is recommended for maximum protection and security. Some people prefer dead bolts that require keys for access.
Door Chains
Shop for door chains, surface bolts or swing bar guards to provide peach of mind. Door chains allow a person to open their door just a couple of inches and speak with and see the person at the door. The fixture is mounted with screws on the inside of a security door and has an attached chain that slides through the anchoring hardware. The chain is easily removed if you wish to open your door.
Strike Plates
Strike plates can be purchased in stainless steel, chrome or brass. This piece of hardware further enhances door security by securing the access point of the locking bolt.
Peepholes
Peepholes also known as door viewers are just a small hole in the door made with clear glass or plastic. They are mounted at typical eye-level and most security doors already have them. You use the peephole to look through the door and see who is coming to the door.
If you do not recognize the person or feel uncomfortable, you do not have to open your door. They are a nice option, especially when used in conjunction with door chains. Both peepholes and door chains can be purchased at most hardware stores and are inexpensive.
