Types of Horse Riding Lessons

The specific types of horse riding lessons available vary greatly depending on trainers. As with many leisure sports, there are few rules regarding how a particular trainer decides to organize lessons. With that in mind, individuals interested in horseback riding lessons should look for lessons based on the type of riding that is most appealing. More experienced riders can find lessons based on additional skills or knowledge needed.

English or Western

In terms of horseback riding, there are two primary styles. Most horse riding lessons focus on one style or the other. Western riding involves larger saddles and a more relaxed riding style. Typically, western pleasure horses are not gaited, meaning their walk creates more bounce for the rider. English riding uses smaller saddles and tack, as well as a more formal riding style. Many English riding lessons use gaited horses, meaning the horse has a very smooth stride with little movement from the rider.

Skill-Based Lessons

Another method for differentiating riding lessons is based on the previous skill of the student. These types of lessons are typically categorized by beginner, intermediate or advanced. Each skill level builds on previously learned skills. A beginner, for example, has little or no horse riding experience. An intermediate rider has some knowledge and skill, but needs additional practice and knowledge. Experienced riders can also take lessons, although these lessons often include advanced skills for shows, competitions and other events.

Age-Based Lessons and Other Horse Lesson Types

Teach a child to ride a horse is much different than teaching an adult. A child will likely have some time pass before she is allowed to saddle a horse on her own. These lessons typically focus only on safely riding a horse, whereas adult lessons cover saddling, bits, ground work and other lessons. Many trainers offer several levels of child lessons, based on specific age groups. Specialty lessons for those with disabilities, regardless of age, are another common type of horseback riding lessons.
