Types of Horse Trailers
Transporting horses after a sale, to and from events and shows or even just to a veterinary clinic requires a horse trailer of some form. Manufacturers offer numerous types of horse trailers, based on the needs of different horse owners. Before making a purchase, ensure the trailer in question is designed for its intended use.
Small General-Purpose Trailers
One of the most common and least expensive types of horse trailers are single and double trailers. These trailers are pulled behind a truck or other vehicle using a simple hitch and ball. Typically, general-use trailers accommodate one or two horses. Approximately the width of the average pickup truck, interior stalls are usually separated by a moveable metal wall positioned down the center of the trailer.
Large Ranch Trailers
For farm or ranching operations, a larger trailer is typically needed. Four and six horse trailers are longer and wider than general-use trailers. Four horse trailers are typically attached to a heavy duty pickup truck with a hitch and ball. Six horse trailers may have a hitch and ball, but more often feature a fifth wheel design, meaning the neck of the trailer attaches inside the bed of the pickup for better stability. Larger trailers such as these may include a small compartment for tack and other horse supplies.
Horse Show and Event Trailers
Horse owners who routinely travel for shows, events and exibitions have options for larger, more elaborate trailers. Much like four and six horse trailers, these horse trailer types are longer and wider than general-use trailers. Most feature a tack room and sleeping quarters for the owner. The number of horses each event trailer accommodates varies, with sizes ranging from three to six horses. The purpose of these trailers is to offer traveling horse owners convenient accommodations.
