Types of Jobs in Science
The field of science is progressing rapidly due to progress made in technology. As more and more discoveries are made, the base widens to make further advancements as we realize just how much we don’t know. Science can be used in numerous aspects of our lives as many areas are considered science, from biology and chemistry to physics and ecology. Because of its diversity, there are several types of jobs available in science.
An ecologist is a type of biologist that studies relationships between organisms and their environments. They search for answers to explain life processes and adaptations, organism distribution and abundance, biodiversity abundance and distribution, and material and energy movement through communities.
Psychologists can work as clinical professionals with patients, scientists conducting research or academic professionals who use psychological research, theories and techniques in real life scenarios. Psychology is a vast field, as there are 56 different divisions recognized by the American Psychological Association. Most psychologists study behavior and mental processes.
An astronomer is constantly looking up because they study planets, stars and galaxies. Composition, history, location and motion are common topics that astronomers specialize in.
Biologists study living organisms. Because the field of biology is so vast, many biologists choose to focus on one area such as structure, function, growth, origin, evolution or distribution. Botanists and zoologists are considered types of biologists, which study plants and animals, respectively.
Chemists deal with chemicals, studying their composition and properties. Like biology, chemistry is also extremely extensive and chemists sometimes specialize in organic, inorganic, medicinal, theoretical, or biological chemistry. Because of the involvement of chemistry in other fields of science, chemistry overlaps with many other science careers.
A geologist studies the components that make up the Earth as well as its history and processes that helped shape the planet. While geology is the main focus of a geologist, physical, chemical and biological processes are also used.
Physicists observe physical phenomena and attempt to explain them. Notable physicists, such as Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein, contributed much to the field of physics and many of their theorems are used today. Classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism and special relativity are all building blocks for most physicists.
