Facts to Consider When Searching for Legal Help

Types of Legal Help Available

There are many different types of legal help available for all different types of legal matters. Whether you’re seeking information about a pressing issue, you’re looking for inexpensive or free services or you’re trying to hire an attorney, you have multiple options through which you can obtain help.

Information

Individuals can find a plethora of legal information in books or online. You can browse the legal section of a local bookstore or library, and often find answers to basic questions. When looking online, make sure to only use reputable sources. The American Bar Association provides a list of places to find valid information. You can also read the actual laws on government websites.

Legal Aid

If you fall below the poverty line, you can request free legal aid from a nonprofit organization that provides legal aid. These services can assist with civil matters but are unable to help with criminal cases. They cannot provide assistance to ever qualifying individual but they should be able either help you or point you in the right direction.

Legal Hotlines

Legal hotlines provide information or legal advice over the phone. Many specialize in providing advice to certain members of the population such as domestic violence victims, the elderly or small business owners. Nonprofit organizations don’t charge a fee for these services but they usually can’t provide much beyond basic advice.

Attorneys

Similar to other professionals, most attorneys specialize in practicing certain types of law. Commonly sought types of lawyers include those knowledgeable in family law, criminal defense, immigration law, personal injury, tax law, bankruptcy law and estate planning. For a simple matter, you likely won’t need to spend the money to obtain specialized assistance but for a more complex matter the counsel of a reputable, knowledgeable professional is often necessary.
