Types of Men's Casual Jackets

While coats are worn during the bitter cold months of winter, jackets are suitable for cool and warm months because of their thinner, lighter construction. In today's market, male shoppers can choose from a number of jackets for casual wear.

Jackets for the Elements

Most casual jackets for men are designed to provide a layer of protection from the elements. Windbreakers, constructed to protect against wind and rain, are thin jackets that have a hood, zipper and pockets. Men wear fleece jackets, which are made using a synthetic fabric called polar fleece, in colder weather. Raincoats have hoods and use water-resistant material to keep the wearer dry.

Jackets for Sports

Clothing manufacturers make some men's jackets specifically for wear during athletic events or to convey a sporty look. While track jackets were originally designed as a warm-up uniform for track and field athletes, athletes from all disciplines and the general population now use this type of sporty jacket. Varsity jackets are a way for high school and college athletes to display their athletic accomplishments.

Other Jackets

Some jackets have a casual look, but can be worn in numerous environments. The tailoring on blazers and sport coats is similar to that of a suit jacket, but these garments are appropriate for casual events. Pea coats are wool jackets that look nice with jeans or trousers. Other jackets suitable for casual occasions include leather jackets, bomber jackets and denim jackets.
