Types of Painting Strokes
Artists use a number of different strokes when they are painting, in order to create different effects in their pictures. These strokes help to create texture, as well as a more realistic painting. There are several different strokes that are commonly seen in paintings.
Smooth
Smooth strokes are used in paintings to create the straight lines that are needed for the outlines of buildings or floors. These lines can be horizontal, vertical or angled. Smooth strokes should be made using a round brush, and paint that has been thinned with water or a paint medium.
Glazing
Glazing is a type of painting stroke that involves layering colors on top of each other to add more depth to the painting. Glazing can be done with any type of brush. It is best to thin the paint with water or a paint medium. Glazing can be done by layering colors while they are still wet, or waiting until after the color has dried to layer another color over it.
Flowing
Flowing strokes are used in a painting to create the natural, wavy look of hair, hills and flowing water. This is done by using a round brush dipped in paint with a thin consistency, to make long, flowing strokes and waves.
Parallel
Parallel strokes are used to create details in paintings, such as arcs, straight and diagonal lines; this is done by using a round or flat brush. Parallel strokes are created by using a quick flick of the wrist to create small, upward strokes.
