Types of Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain tiles are a form of ceramic tile. They are an ideal choice for floors, bathrooms, and walls in both a home and commercial setting. Although they come in a variety of colors, textures and sizes, there are four main types of porcelain tile: polished/semi-polished, glazed, matte and structured porcelain.

Porcelain tile is an attractive and practical option for high-traffic areas. Because it's fired at a higher temperature than regular ceramic tile, it is not only more durable, but less porous. It can also imitate the look of natural stone at a fraction of the cost. It's easy to clean and maintain. Unless unglazed or polished tile is installed, porcelain tile doesn't need to be sealed.

Porcelain Tile Types

1) Polished and semi-polished. Polished and semi-polished porcelain tiles go through an elaborate firing process during manufacturing to seal the tile.
2) Glazed porcelain. Glazed porcelain is one of the most common types of porcelain due to the durability and variety of colors. It's also easy to clean, making it a popular choice for homeowners. A glazed porcelain tile requires no further treatment because the tiles become non-porous during the glazing process. Glazed porcelain is scratch, stain and moisture resistant.
3) Matte porcelain. Matte porcelain is sometimes referred to as natural or honed porcelain. Typically, matte porcelain is made from a kiln and requires no sealing.
4) Structured porcelain. Also, called rock finish, structured porcelain is highly textured. Because of the extreme texture, structured porcelain is usually used for external purposes. Sealing is not required for this type of porcelain.
