Types of Roof Cleaning Chemicals
Maintaining the health and aesthetic appeal of your roof is important. A roof that is free of damage will protect the residents from any outdoor elements and a clean, well-maintained roof will only add to the home's value. Using the right chemicals is key to cleaning a roof.
Bleach
Bleach is an extremely powerful and potent germ killing substance. For this reason, it is an ideal choice for ridding your roof of any mold. The major disadvantage, however, is that bleach can, as its name implies, bleach and discolor roofing material, such as shingles. To avoid this, be sure to use color safe bleach and take care to not leave the bleach mixture on each surface for more than ten minutes. To use bleach, mix one part to four parts water and a small amount (about one teaspoon) of dishwashing soap for extra dirt fighting, and use the mixture to clean your roof.
Sodium Hydroxide
Though it is not highly recommended, some homeowners have used sodium hydroxide to spot clean small surface areas of their roof. It is particularly helpful with mold or algae. However, since the substance requires some considerable scrubbing or power washing to work fully, it may cause actual damage to the roof materials thereby discounting its cleaning ability.
Gradual Method Cleaners
There are a number of more environmentally-safe roof cleaning substances on the market that do not contain harsh chemicals. Because of this, they do not work as instantaneously but, rather, are meant to be applied and left alone. Over time, the cleaner will work to gradually improve the look of your roof. This change may happen over the course of several weeks to a few months.
Professional Brands
And, of course, there are a number of premade roof cleaning sprays and products available on the market. You can find these online or by visiting a home improvement or roofing store.
