Types of Roofing Paper

Roofing papers are among the components of a roofing job. Roofing papers help to keep the seams from leaking. They also help to protect the wood and help the top layer to stick to the roof. There are a wide variety of roofing papers available, and the choice of what type to use depends on the type of roofing materials used.

Roofing Felt

Roofing felt, also called tar paper, is the most popular roofing paper. It is commonly used because it is among the best papers available for sealing nail holes, seams and cracks. It also provides great protection for the roofing material and it can be placed beneath any type of roofing material.
It is made of fiberglass that has bituminous materials, which gives roofing felt its sealing and adherence properties.

Synthetic Roofing Paper

Though synthetic roofing paper is new to the market, it is becoming increasingly popular. Synthetic roofing paper is made of synthetic polymers. It is wrinkle-free and tear resistant, and because of these it stays more even when laid on the roof and is a lot safer for roof installers to walk on while doing roof installation. Other advantages of using of synthetic roofing paper is that it weighs less and is made in light colors, and this will make the roof to stay cooler. Synthetic roofing paper is a lot more expensive than roofing felt.

Self-Adhering Roofing Paper

Self-adhering roofing paper can be the best choice for water and ice barriers. It is often used in parts of the roof that are likely to have ice dams or where there is leak in the roof. Self-adhering paper is not cheap. Self-adhering roofing paper is much thicker than any other type of underlayment and no fasteners are required for its installation.
