Types of Shampoo for Wigs

There are a variety of different ways that you can clean a wig leaving it looking good and smelling fresh. The type of shampoo that should be used on a wig depends on the materials used to make the wig. Synthetic wigs require special wig shampoos or other all-natural cleaning options be used to keep the wig clean and looking good.

Synthetic Wig Shampoo

Synthetic wigs are made of materials that cannot be shampooed with standard shampoo. The synthetic fibers of the wig must be gently washed so that the wig stays looking new and the fibers of the hair are not ruined due to harsh chemicals found in many shampoos. Most wig stores carry a variety of different brands of synthetic wig shampoo that work well for cleaning synthetic wigs.

Human Hair Wig Shampoo

A wig that is made of human hair can be washed with standard wig shampoo or with any standard shampoo that you would traditionally use on your real hair. This type of wig can withstand the chemicals found in most shampoos just fine, so it can be washed using any shampoo.

Baking Soda

An all-natural alternative for cleaning both synthetic and human hair wigs is baking soda. Fill the kitchen sink about half of the way full and then add a half-cup of baking soda into the water. Agitate the water to thoroughly mix the water and baking soda and then add the wig into the solution and allow it to soak overnight before rinsing and removing.

Baby Shampoo

When wig shampoo is not available, baby shampoo is gentle enough to clean a synthetic wig without harming the synthetic materials. Simply fill the kitchen sink about half of the way full and then add a capful of baby shampoo into the water and agitate. Allow the wig to soak in the solution for 2-4 hours and then rinse.
