Types of Tile Work
Whether building, remodeling or upgrading a home, working with assorted types and styles of tile is an option for both indoor and outdoor areas. From elegant marble flooring and ceramic shower enclosures, to unique tiled wall patterns, tiles play a significant role in a home's décor.
Several types of do it yourself or professional tiling projects include installing tile flooring, bathroom and kitchen upgrades, countertops and customized wall tiling. The types of material used for tiling projects include ceramic, porcelain, slate, marble, granite, terrazzo, mosaic, pavers and Mexican tile.
Floors
Tiling work involving floors include laying a grid to install new tile, removal and replacement of material, such as old carpet or outdated vinyl tile, with new smooth, textured, glazed or unglazed tile. Outdoors, weatherproof tiles are installed at pool and patio areas. Depending on the type of material used, tile is grouted at the seams or a sealant is added to protect porous tiles.
Bathroom and Kitchen
Projects for the bathroom and kitchen include installation of countertops, flooring and backsplashes. Tile work for the bathroom also includes designing and building tiled shower stalls and installing or replacing tile on the walls around a bathtub.
Backsplashes
This type of tile work involves installing tiles behind a sink or stove to protect walls from heat and liquid. Tiles used are non-porous to prevent staining of the tile and absorbing bacteria. Materials used for backsplashes include ceramic, hand-painted, glass or mosaic tiles.
Walls
For customized walls, assorted colors and sizes of tile are used to create decorative designs or intricate patterns using metal, slate, glass, ceramic, mosaic and stone tiles.
