Trade Certification for an Industrial Electrician

Types of Tools Used By an Industrial Electrician

An industrial electrician will work on projects much larger than the average electrician will. Because of this, they will need the best tools to help them as they work in the field. Having the right tools will make the job infinitely easier.

There are several tools that the industrial electrician needs. The greatest difference between standard electricians tools and those of the industrial electrician is insulation. Because the industrial electrician works with much higher voltage, they need greater insulation. Keep this in mind when choosing your tools.

  • Multimeter- The multimeter comes in both analog and digital varieties. Whichever one you choose is entirely up to your preference. The multimeter measures resistance, voltage and ohms. It is the most necessary tool in the toolbox of the electrician.

  • Fish tape- This allows an electrician to pull wire through areas that they would not normally be able to pull it, such as pipes.

  • Pliers- A common tool of the trade, both needle nose and channel locks are important tools for the industrial electrician to own.

  • Wire strippers- Although they perform the task that they are named after, they actually do much more. Wire strippers also cut and crimp wire, making it a multi-function tool.

  • Power drill- This tool will help the electrician drill holes when necessary. It is important to have several different bits. Different types and sizes will allow you to drill for almost any application.

  • Flashlight- You will probably not have light in many areas that you work, because you will need to turn breakers off while working. A high-powered halogen beam will give you the light that you need.
