Types of Traditional Oak Outbuildings

An outbuilding is a separate facility or building that is associated with the main building. Many outbuildings are located in both industrial and rural areas. However, rural areas typically boast more outbuildings than metro areas do. Outbuildings serve as storage spaces and are a great way to save money.

Stables

Stables are primarily used to house horses. Most stables are designed to hold multiple stalls in which the horses are kept. Horses are also fed and groomed inside of their stalls. Free standing stables are some of the oldest types of outbuildings in existence. Stables are typically found on farms and can range in size and style. Some larger stables can be used for different agricultural events.

Outhouses

Outhouses are smaller in size than other traditional outbuildings. At inception, the primary function of outhouses was as a bathroom. Most outhouses contained a toilet, or in its earliest forms, a hole that was dug into the ground that acted as a toilet. This latter type of outhouse was referred to as a squat outhouse, because occupants had to squat all the way down to the ground to use the bathroom. In some cases, an outhouse can be used as a storage space for animals.

Garages

Garages serve multiple purposes. A traditional garage is used to store a person's automobile. However, garages can also serve as great storage spaces and even a separate living or entertainment area. Depending on the size of a home, garages can occupy one, two or even three cars at a time. In the United States, garages are usually attached to the rest of the home and are not a separate building.

Sheds

Sheds can be found at various building areas, and are also popular additions for homeowners. Sheds can be used as storage spaces or personal workshops, and can vary in size and functional capabilities. Many homeowners use sheds to keep their garden tools and other accessories. Agricultural sheds are used to store farm equipment and other supplies, while bike sheds are found at schools across the country. Students use bike sheds to lock up their bicycles.
