Types of Yoga Mats

One of the most essential items necessary for practicing yoga is the mat. A variety of mat types are available to satisfy the needs dictated by yoga style and personal preference. The main function of a yoga mat is to provide traction and prevent slipping. The additional characteristics of color and print are purely individual choice.

Sticky Mat

This is the most widely used type of yoga mat. Its sticky surface provides excellent traction for stretching, bending and reaching poses. The sticky mat is traditionally thin, offering limited cushioning. In time sticky mats may lose their sticky due to build up of oils and sweat. Hand wash the mat with a mild soap, rinse thoroughly with water and allow to air dry.  The sticky should return.

Ultra Thickness Mat

This is the same material as the sticky mat, only double thick. The difference between the sticky mat and the ultra thickness mat is the greater cushioning provided by the latter.

Deluxe Yoga Mat

This variety of mat offers a greater degree of traction because it has an extra sticky surface on both sides, as well as a highly textured pattern. It is generally thicker than the standard sticky mat.

Universal Yoga Mat

Once again the mat is sticky, but only offers slight texture. The unique feature of the universal yoga mat is the way it allows your hands and feet to gently penetrate into the foam.

Beginner Yoga Mat

This is the mat for those who are not sure of their commitment to yoga. The mat provides enough cushioning to be comfortable and enough tackiness to aid in traction without breaking the bank.

Travel Yoga Mat

The travel mat is designed to fold or roll into a small bundle that can easily be transported. The sticky quality necessary to make a good yoga mat is there, but the cushion is less than other mats. Fortunately, travel mats can often be paired with a towel to increase comfort. This style of mat is designed for travel, not the regular yoga class.

Cotton Yoga Mat

The benefit of the cotton yoga mat is its ability to absorb sweat. This mat does not provide the same sticking or traction characteristics as the other mats. However, it does provide cushioning. Not all cotton mats are washable so a removable cover is useful.
