Various Styles of Home and Garden Lighting
Adding outdoor lighting to your home and garden is an easy way to increase the nighttime curb appeal of your property. There are options for every dark space in your yard. With unlimited designs and prices, you too can ‘see the light’.
Homes and gardens are an outward expression of our personalities; everyone wants a home and garden to look as good as possible. Installing outdoor lighting is one way to increase the attraction of your home and landscape. Exterior lighting can also have the advantage of increasing the value of your home, deterring robbers and extending outdoor time once it gets dark.
Outdoor Lighting for the House
- Wall Lamps: These light fixtures wire into your home, usually by the door, and are controlled with a switch. They are available in a wide range of designs and prices. Wall lights enhance the welcoming feeling of your home as well as providing a measure of security by illuminating the doorway.
- Spotlights: Either wired in to shine up at a house or down on the grounds of a home, spotlights are placed on the ground or in the eaves and peaks of houses and garages. They can be turned on and off with a switch, a timer or a motion sensor. They are a great deterrent to robbers and trespassers.
- Flood lighting: Wired high up on a pole, floodlights are meant to lighten a large area of your property. These outdoor lighting fixtures will illuminate areas such as a playground, a barbeque or pool.
Landscape Lighting
- Stakes: Either wired, plugged in or solar-powered, these outside lights are, at their most basic, a bulb on a stick. They create low-level lighting that is used to line walkways, drives and garden edges. There are many variations and prices.
- Spotlight: A low intensity spotlight or two can be used at ground level to highlight a tree, fountain or other garden feature. A common variation is to use colored bulbs in the spotlight to create contrast and interest.
- Lamps: Usually solar-powered, lamps can hang from Shepard’s Hooks in the middle of a garden or sit on posts at the end of a drive. They are used to light small areas.
- Ornamental: Mostly solar-powered, these lights store up energy during the day and then come on at dusk. They are placed right in a garden to add appeal after sundown. They change colors, twinkle and glow throughout the night. They are available in many different styles and prices.
Outdoor lights add charm and functionality to your home and garden. They help to light the way, a welcome door or to chase away the dark. Outside lights are an easy way to help to bring the indoor personality of your home to the outdoors.
