Ways to Exterminate Snakes

The very thought of snakes can bring terror. Although most snakes are relatively harmless, many are poisonous. Not knowing which snakes are poisonous and which are not, it's safe to approach all snakes with care. Exterminating snakes can be difficult and dangerous.

Snakes move quickly and quietly. They breed fast, and one snake can lead to numerous others. Because of the danger involved in dealing with snakes, it is always best to approach a snake problem cautiously. Even when a decision has been made to exterminate snakes, the matter should be not be treated lightly.

Ways to exterminate snakes:

  • Killing snakes. The best way to kill a snake in close quarters is with a long, blunt object. Snakes can survive even when cut, so the best way to kill a snake is to beat it to death. Using long-handled objects, shovels and hoes, are the most effective because it will give some distance when dealing with a potentially poisonous snake. A rifle is an effective way of killing a snake, as well.

  • Capturing snakes. There are different ways of capturing a snake, including glue snake traps. These are most successful capturing smaller snakes. Snake repellants have little success when dealing with snakes.

  • Calling a professional. Professional pest control services deal strongly with snake removal and extermination. They are equipped to capture and/or kill, and will typically honor client's wishes, when possible, to the manner of handling the snake problem. Although certainly the safest method, it can be costly. It is best to call different exterminators for pricing when possible.

  • Making snakes uncomfortable. Snakes thrive in certain environments. There is no way to change the weather (at least not outside), but you can eliminate the snake's sources of food. Typically, snakes eat garbage, rodents and other small animals, and bugs. Eliminating a bug and rodent problem may ultimately eliminate a snake problem. Making sure that the garbage is secured may have the same effect. However, this process takes time.
