Western VS English Horseback Riding
When it comes to riding style, there are a few notable differences between English and Western riding. The Western style is more relaxed and representative of the typical cowboy, while the English style is more reflective of the regal and sophisticated.
English
English riding is typically done by the more "refined" rider. This is the type of riding is done in many competitions and shows. The riding style is more of a bouncy trot and both hands are used for the reigns. The short stirrups help to maintain the post movements of the rider when a horse is trotting. The English saddle is small and lightweight, making it ideal for show jumping.
Western
The Western style of horseback riding involves using one hand to hold the reigns. This method comes from the early days when cowboys used one hand for the reigns and one to rope cattle. The Western saddles also are equipped with horns which the cowboys used to store the ropes. Since the cowboys spent many hours riding, the western saddle is larger and designed for comfort. The stirrups are longer and allow more flexibility for the height of the rider.
Attire
The clothing for Western style riding has a relaxed feel with the rider donning jeans, a comfortable shirt and western hat and boots. The English riding attire is more formal and many wear dressy shirts with a blazer or jacket and riding pants with leather reinforcement at the knees. Instead of hats, the english riders don helmets.
