What Are HD Sunglasses?
Sunglasses are manufactured with a variety of lens options to fit your individual needs and preferences. There are variations in sun protection, polarization, color options and now HD, or high definition, sunglasses are available. Even your local pharmacy may stock HD sunglasses next to the Foster Grants.
The benefits of HD sunglasses are:
- Blocks UV rays
- Increases clarity of vision
- Increases brightness of colors
- Available with bifocal magnification
The technology used to accomplish this is in the lens. HD sunglasses are equipped with amber-tinted lenses that filter the blue light spectrum. When the blue light is removed, colors and objects appear more vivid, clear and bright thus creating a "high definition" appearance.
Unlike UV light rays, blue light rays are visible to us and they scatter easily which creates the glare we see. The rays emitted by blue light are just as harmful to the eyes and overall health as UV rays. Studies have shown that blocking blue light improves sleep patterns and can retard the progression of macular degeneration.
It is true that filtering the blue rays does provide more eye protection than filtering the UV rays only. Whether HD sunglasses provide a more high definition visual experience or not is a matter of opinion. Some people enjoy the brighter effect and therefore believe the glasses work. Others do not care for the blue filter, creating the belief the glasses do not work.
Fortunately, HD sunglasses are usually inexpensive so you can form your own opinion on their effectiveness.
