What Are Some Preventive Dental Services?

Preventive dental services are an excellent way to keep your teeth and gums healthy for years to come. You may already be in the habit or practicing some of these at home, but others will need to performed by a dentist. There are a variety of preventive dental services which can be done in your dentist's office.

Dental Exam: During a dental exam a dentist will closely examine your teeth and gums. They are looking for abnormal bumps, spots or areas of pain. Having a dental exam is important because cavities or oral cancer can be caught early and treatment can begin.

Routine cleaning: A routine cleaning should be done every six months to one year. During this procedure, the dentist will clean and polish your teeth.

X-Rays: If x-rays are performed as part of a dental exam they can be considered a preventative dental service. Dental x-rays can catch problems such as wisdom teeth or cavities forming that you were unaware of.

Fluoride: Two trays, shaped like mouth guards, is filled with a flavored gel and placed in your mouth. A timer will be set. Fluoride helps keep your teeth strong and prevent cavities.

Sealants: Sealants are very important in preventing cavities from forming. This treatment is applied by squirting a liquid from a syringe into the crevasses of molar teeth. Once the application is dry it helps to prevent small pieces of food from getting trapped in the teeth and causing cavities.

Patient Education: This is perhaps one of the best preventive dental services available. When a patient comes into the dentist's chair a great learning opportunity exists. Good oral hygiene is important in preventing cavities, gingivitis and other tooth ailments. Through patient education, dentists can teach proper brushing and flossing techniques. They can recommend products and explain the health effects of smoking or chewing tobacco on dental health.
