What Does a Systems Engineer Do?

Systems engineering is the branch of engineering focused on the design and management of long-term projects and operations. Systems engineers work on projects that vary in size and length. The engineers often choose to specialize in disciplines that include control engineering, industrial engineering, and project management.

Systems engineers usually design and monitor systems or projects to ensure that they are operational for as long as necessary. Most engineers complete this through the completion of six specific steps and the constant re-evaluation carried out at the end of each step.

  1. Identifying the problem and determine the desired outcome. This involves assessing the requirements of a solution to the problem and considering the nature of the project.

  2. Identifying and evaluating the different methods by which the problem can be solved. There are usually multiple ways to solve a problem; systems engineers evaluate each solution based on cost, risk, and performance.

  3. Developing a working model of the system with the chosen solutions in effect. It is important to model the system and how it will operate with the solution in effect because problems and design flaws are often revealed in this step.

  4. Making the necessary changes to the system. Integrating the current system or project often involves ceasing operation for a period of time until the changes are made.

  5. Launching the system. Launching the system with the solution implemented usually includes constant monitoring and assessments of the system or project's products.

  6. Evaluating the performance of the system. Evaluation of the system's performance is a vital step and is usually required by a systems engineer's employer. This step usually involves completing a report that outlines the changes made to the system and a performance comparison.
