What Does the E Stand for on Tire Ratings?
Tire ratings are used to help find the right tires for your vehicle. It is important that for your vehicle you have the appropriate tire sizes to help the vehicle function to its’ fullest potential. The “E” on tire ratings tells you how strong the tire is and the maximum load you should carry on the tire.
Function of the Tire
The load range shows the maximum pressure of air and strength of the sidewall that the tire can function properly with.
Identification of the Tire
A to F are the alphabetical letters that are usually used to help identify the load range of a tire based upon the load pressure. The “E” rating would mean that the load pressure is pretty high on the tire.
Location of the Letter on the Tire
The letter of the load range, such as "E" can be found right in the service description of tire. The service description can be found on the sidewall of a tire. You should be able to easily identify the letter on the tire because it will have spaces on either side of the letter.
Vehicle Type of the Tire
Light truck tires use the "E" for the designated load ratings of the tires. You will not find the "E" on passengers’ tires. To identify whether a tire is a light truck tire or a passenger tire, look at the beginning of the service description on the sidewall of a tire. The difference in the vehicle type of tires is the light truck tires will start with "LT" and the passenger tires start with a "P".
Significance of the "E"
Since "E" is the second to last highest load pressure, it signifies one of the highest load ranges available in tire ratings. If you normally carry heavy loads in your truck you will probably need a tire rating somewhere around "E."
