How to Make a Debt Management Program Work

What Is a Debt Elimination Plan?

If you are covered up in debt and do not want to spend the next 30 years paying it off, you should consider a debt elimination plan. By following a monthly budget, along with a debt elimination plan, you will have your debts paid off in a reasonable amount of time. A debt elimination plan is simple to follow; however, you must faithfully stick to the plan for it to work.

Begin your debt elimination plan by not adding any more debt to what you already owe. This may mean cutting up your credit cards and putting off expensive purchases, but it will be worth it in the long run.

Make a budget by writing down your monthly income, plus all of your expenditures. Categorize your expenditures by needs and wants. While you have to pay your electric bill each month, you can cut out unnecessary wants, such as going to the movies every weekend.

Find ways to make extra money each month to help repay your debt. You could pick up odd jobs on the weekend or make crafts to sell at flea markets. You should also find ways that you can save money each month and put this money toward your debt, as well. Some money saving ideas include using coupons at the grocery store and taking your lunch to work, instead of eating out.

Once you have stopped adding debt and start gaining extra cash each month, you can begin eliminating your debt. Focus on the debt that has the highest interest rate first. Instead of just paying the minimum amount required, use the extra money that you have saved and earned each month to add to this debt repayment.

When the first debt is paid off, do the same thing with the debt that has the next highest interest rate. Use the money that you would normally use on the paid off debt to add to the monthly payment of this debt. Repeat these steps, until all of your debt is paid off. If you stick to a debt elimination plan, you can finally become debt free.
