What Is a Neurologist's Role in Cancer Treatment?

When a person is diagnosed with cancer they often have several doctors on board to treat them. Their general practitioner will be informed of the treat plan, and an oncologist. Depending on the cancer type, there may be times they need to see a neurologist to help with anything having to do with the central nervous system.

What Neurologists Do?

People that have illnesses or diseases involving the central nervous system are referred to neurologists because this is their specialty. People with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and forms of dementia along with other illnesses are seen under the care of a neurologist. People diagnosed with certain cancers may need to see a neurologist for various reasons.

How can a Neurologist Help with Cancer Treatment?

Some cancers involve the central nervous system and a neurologist can help further with a diagnosis. They can also help patients in pain and would assist in neurological testing that oncologists would not be as familiar with. The medications neurologists choose are often much different than an oncologist would administer, which is why the role of the neurologist is very important.

Other Ways Neurologists can Assist with Cancer Patients

Those that have cancer needing brain scans in order to search for tumors can also be helped by the role of a neurologist. They send their patients for a wide range of scans and can be of great use to those that have cancer involving the spine or the brain since they understand the various parts of the brain and spine that affect the body's movements.
