What Is a Spa?

Spas or hot tubs for the home are relaxing and may relieve pain, stress and fatigue. Spas come in a variety of models and vary in style, function and finish. Different sizes are available accommodating 3 to 8 people. Some accessories of a spa are LED lights, hot tub covers, jet kits and remote controls. Many spas can be installed indoors or outdoors.

Definition and Features

A spa or a hot tub is a self-contained pool of water that’s moved by bubbling jets. The average size fits four people but there are spas that are made big enough to fit eight people.  Features of a spa include heaters, pump and filter, insulation, covers and comfortable seats. Some accessories that can be added are hot tub remote control, lighting system, neck massage and spa entertainment system. A self-contained spa may be priced between $2000 and $8000. A customized built spa is more expensive.

Types

There are different types of spas. Most spas are made of an acrylic shell and have a fiberglass understructure and a wood cabinet. The shell surface resists UV rays, chemicals or chipping and cracking. The spa understructure supports the weight of the water. Spas with an acrylic shell need to be installed on a solid surface and may require and electric outlet. Wooden spas or hot tubs are typically made of teak, redwood or cedar. They also need to be set up on a solid service and can be heated with electricity, gas or wood. In ground spas are made of gunite or concrete material and require excavation, plumbing and electrical work.

Considerations

Spas have a variety of benefits. A spa is very relaxing and relieves stress, which may contribute to healing. The warm water agitated by the jets can help ease pain and stiffness. Some people may experience weight loss if they soak in the spa regularly. Some disadvantages of a home spa located outdoors are weather changes and animals damaging the spa. Outdoors spas may also be less private. Indoor spas are more private but can be very expensive to install.
