What Types of Cat Breeds Have the Tabby Pattern?

There is one common mistake when it comes to the tabby pattern, and that is thinking its part of an actual cat breed. The tabby pattern is in fact a type of coat that many cat breeds can sport. This is a natural pattern from the cat's African wildcat ancestor. These are the most popular cat breeds that have the tabby pattern.

The Turkish Van

This cat is known for its remarkable love of swimming and being in the water. Most Turkish vans have a beautiful white and spotless coat with a dab of brown at the tail. Tabby Turkish vans have a white and brown coat coloring with unusual blue and orange eyes. The tabby coat is considered rare among the Turkish vans but is becoming increasingly more common.

The Bengal Cat

Due to its close relation to the African Wildcat, all Bengals have a distinct tabby coat pattern. They typically have large black spots against their light brown fur, with stripes on their bellies and their tail dipped in black. Although they may look wild, Bengals are known to be fun and energetic cats that love to play catch just like dogs.

The Egyptian Mau

All Egyptian Mau cats have the tabby coat in the form of stripes and dots on their backs. They have short fur and are considered one of the easiest cats to groom. Egyptian Mau cats have had the same appearance for over 3,000 years, making them one of the oldest breeds to keep the same look. Their coats come in colors of grey tabby, brown and black spotted, and silver tabby.
