What Works Best for Dental Pain?
Pain in your mouth can be excruciating, but there are many different remedies. Whether you need a cure to help until you can get to the dentist or you are wondering what you should be talking to your dentist about, there are many treatments for dental pain you can consider. Find out more about these treatments here.
Your pain may be caused by a broken tooth, exposed nerve, dislodged crown, abscess, or infection. Whatever the cause, you may be able to treat the pain with simple remedies or you may need a dentist as soon as possible. The following are a few things you can try to get rid of the dental pain you feel.
- Keep your mouth clean. Use antibacterial mouthwash after you eat and try to stay away from sticky and sugary foods. Brush with a toothpaste that contains peroxide and is effective for sensitive teeth.
- See a dentist. If your pain is caused by infection you will probably get a prescription for antibiotics and you may get an analgesic to dull the pain until your infection is gone and the tooth can be removed or repaired.
- Use a numbing gel. These are fairly easy to find and inexpensive; they can be had over the counter or you can ask your dentist for a stronger salve.
- Try temporary filler. Broken teeth and dislodged crowns can cause pain; a temporary filling material can alleviate the pain you are suffering until you get a permanent fix.
- Pick up an over the counter anti-inflammatory. Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can kill the inflammation in your gums or tissues that are causing you pain.
These may all be helpful suggestions, but if you have severe pain, fainting, nausea, or trouble eating you should definitely see a dentist or go to an emergency room. There are emergency dentists available as well and the medical staff at your local hospital may be able to help you find one.
