What are Animals Services?

There are many types of animal services in the community. These organizations and businesses remove nuisance, sick and stray animals from residential neighborhoods and other areas that humans inhabit. Local, state and federal entities regulate and monitor these services to make sure they do not harm the animals in their care.

Spay and Neuter

Animal services will spay and neuter cats and dogs in their care before people adopt them as pets. They also offer this service to pet owners who do not want more than one pet in the home. Spaying and neutering helps cut down on animal overpopulation.

Nuisance Animals

Services pick up animals that wonder into residential areas and homes. Nuisance animals present problems by living in attics, basements and garages. Nuisance animals can also destroy property or present a danger to humans.

Service workers are typically experienced trappers and personnel who do this type of work daily. These professionals may pick up or trap alligators, large snakes and raccoons. If the animal is not known to take up residence in human habitat, services relocate the animal to a suitable environment. However, repeat offenders or animals that do not fear humans may be humanely euthanized for public safety.

Animal Shelters

Animal shelters are temporary homes for stray animals. The majority of shelters provide medication, food and love. Shelters may see an overpopulation of unwanted or stray animals, and work hard to find loving homes for cats and dogs in need of care. Some shelters place time limits on how long animals remain in their care. They often euthanize animals that cannot be adopted. Other shelters care for animals regardless of how long they stay at the shelter.
