A bit is attached to the bridle and is placed in the horse’s mouth. A bit rests on the bars, or the gums between the front and back teeth. There are thousands of variations of bits.
Hackamore
This type of tack has a heavy noseband and fits over the horse’s head. These are used in place of a bridle and bit to control the horse.
Reins
Reins attach to the outer ends of the bit and the rider holds the other ends of the reins in his hands to communicate with the horse. Pulling on the reins directs the horse and tells him to stop.
