What are the Different Types of Acupuncture Needles?
Acupuncture treats the patient with the insertion and the manipulation of needles into the acupuncture points of the body. The most common of the acupuncture needles are the metal filiform which are thread-like needles that are made from stainless steel, silver or gold.
Three-edged needle
This is a thick needle with a round handle and a triangular body with a sharp tip. It resembles a lance. It is used to puncture the skin at the acupuncture point to remove drops of blood.
Plum blossom needle
The plum blossom needle is called a seven star needle and is arranged with seven needles to form a flower. They are attached like a hammerhead to a long handle. The needles are lightly and swiftly tapped on the skin at specific points.
Intradermal needles
The intradermal needles are thin, short needles that are used on the ears. They are used to treat chronic pain and addictions. They are inserted and left in place.
Press needles
The press needles are used when the stimulation of the acupuncture point needs to be left in the point for a period of time. They are small and pressed on the point and held with an adhesive patch. The metal at the base of the needle stops the needle from being pushed too far into the skin.
Ear seeds
These are tiny objects that are pressed to the acupuncture points and adhesive tape is used to attach to the skin for ongoing pressure. They do not penetrate the skin.
