What are the Types of Materials Needed to Build a Residential Fence?
People install residential fences for many different reasons. The fence can be used to keep out unwanted guests or to keep children and pets safe. Not only can it be used for protection but it can also beautify your land. There are materials that are needed for almost all types of residential fences to make it function properly.
Posts
Posts are needed to help the fence stand up. They are vital for any type of residential fence. The posts are placed 6 to 8 inches apart to keep the fence stable. Posts are also used to attach the other parts of the fence to. Holes are dug several feet into the ground to accompany the posts. The posts are placed in the holes and cement is poured into the hole around the posts to secure them in place.
Fence Panels
The fence panels are the cross sections of the fence. They are commonly attached in a horizontal position to the posts. You can also attach them in a vertical position for a different look. The fence may come assembled or in a kit that you have to put together.
Tools
In some cases, a saw is needed to cut excess parts of the fence. A screwdriver is a handy tool to tighten screws with but a drill is even better. A tape measure is used to make the sure the posts are spaced appropriately. Some people use a level to make sure the posts are straight.
Fasteners
Fasteners are needed to hold the fence together. Nails and wood screws are a few of those fasteners. They hold the fence securely to the posts. Longer fasteners should be used to make sure the joints are reinforced and to add strength to the fence.
Hinges
The hinges are what connect the gate to the fence and posts. Additional bolts should be used to secure the hinges. Hinges used on interior doors will not work for a residential fence because they are not strong enough. Heavy-duty metal hinges should be used.
Latch
The latch is what keeps the fence from swinging open. It is attached between the gate and post. A combination lock, padlock or automatic lock can be used for extra security.
Gate
A fence is not complete without a gate. It is installed so you can gain access to the inside or outside of the fence. There are many styles and designs of gates to make your residential fence look unique.
