What is Dental Hygiene?
Dental hygiene is the care of the teeth and mouth. Cavities, bad breath, diseases and mouth sores are all caused by improper dental hygiene. Brushing, flossing and mouth wash are important hygienic daily activities. Visits to a dentist or dental hygienist are also important to keep your teeth and mouth in good condition.
Plaque
Plaque is a bacteria that lives in your mouth and cause cavities. A buildup of plaque looks like a yellowish paste that appears along the gum line and between teeth. The foods you eat cause plaque to form. Sugary food as well breads and starches cause the most plaque build up.
Brushing Your Teeth
Brushing your teeth everyday is the most basic part of dental hygiene. Use a toothbrush with stiff bristles and a flexible head that can maneuver around the grooves and curves of teeth. Place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle and use short circular motions over your teeth. Toothpaste with tartar control and fluoride provide for best results.
Flossing
Flossing is just as important as brushing to maintain good dental hygiene. Use about 18 inches of floss and wrap the ends around the index finger of both hands. Work it between your teeth in a soft back and forth motion. Once you have it between two teeth, make scooping motion to retrieve lodged food particle and plaque.
Mouthwash
Using a mouthwash each time you brush and floss is an added way to keep your mouth clean and your breath fresh. Antibacterial mouthwash in between brushing helps to keep the amount of plaque to the minimum. Look for a mouthwash that contains fluoride as well. It helps to prevent tooth decay and keeps your breath fresh.
Dentist
It is very important to make visits to a dentist at least twice a year. Dental hygienists can clean teeth thoroughly and provide additional measures to prevent cavities. If cavities have already formed or if there are any signs of disease the dentist can remove the cavities and treat the disease. They Xray your mouth, teeth and jaw bones to discover any underlying issues. Visits three times per year are recommended unless problems arise.
