What is Distant Education?
For many, distance education is the only alternative, and for others, it is merely an option. It offers students an additional way to earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in an environment that is most convenient to them. Those who already have degrees may look to this route when pursuing further education such as a master’s degree or a PhD.
What is distance education? Distance education or learning is a way in which students can acquire an education without physically having to be at a school or in a classroom. Teacher and classroom interaction can be done at home through the use of a computer, the Internet, telephone, email and video. Many college and universities are now offering high quality distance learning programs to their students.
Why consider distance learning? Those who consider distance learning include high school and college students, adults needing continuing education credits, stay-at-home moms and those involved in corporate training. Distance learning provides the flexibility for individuals to complete a program of study and course work on their own, in their own home, and sometimes, at their own pace.
What technology is essential for distance learning? Students need the use of a computer and the Internet for most distance learning programs. They may need to chat, email or IM instructors or other students about class work. Video and audio conferencing, mail, TV, satellite and the telephone are other examples of how communication exists between a student and the instructor.
Who shouldn’t consider distance education? Students who lack self-discipline should not consider distance education. These types of programs require a student to be focused, disciplined and serious about his education. For students who desire teacher and student one-on-one interaction or an active social life, distanct learning would not be a good option.
