What is Homeowners Insurance?
Homeowners insurance is an insurance policy that protects your home and property in the event of a loss or a lawsuit. It is essential to have enough coverage, so that if something were to happen, your home and all property can be replaced. Homeowners insurance protects your investment against special hazards.
Protects Against:
- Fire
- Lightning
- Wind
- Hail
- Theft
What is covered?
There are six different coverages that are covered in a standard homeowners insurance policy.
- Coverage A: Dwelling - Protects from damage caused to the structure of the home or a total loss of the structure. This part of the policy would pay to replace the structure that was damaged.
- Coverage B: Other Structures on Your Property - Protects other buildings, like detached garages or storage buildings, that are on your property. Most times this coverage is 10% of the dwelling amount, but more can be purchased.
- Coverage C: Personal Property/Contents - Protects all personal items and contents of the house from fire, theft or any other peril that may occur.
- Coverage D: Loss of Use - Provides living expenses should you not be able to live in your home while it is being repaired. This includes the cost of a stay at a hotel, restaurant bills and other living expenses.
- Coverage E: Personal Liability Protection - Protects you and other household members in the event that a lawsuit is filed against you for either property damage or bodily injury. This part of the policy includes your pets, in case that they were to bite someone.
- Coverage F: Medical Payments - Covers any medical expenses that you may have to pay in the event that someone was hurt on your property, but did not file a lawsuit to recover damages.
