What is Microsoft Word

Word processing has come a long way since its inception and continues to add new and exciting features to its long list of the ones already available. Microsoft Word can be used for many things today. Coming from a history of word processors that only allowed for the written word to be written down; Word is software that is almost a necessity for any computer user.

Microsoft Word is a word processing program that allows users to do much more than just type. The color of the background and text can be changed for fun projects. Students can use this software for essays and research papers. Word has a grammar and spellchecker added to it for all users. The program underlines different grammar and spelling mistakes in either a green or red squiggle. These let the user know there is something that needs to be fixed.

If a user hovers over the mistake with a mouse, the explanation for the mistake pops up. Aligning text is important when working on essays as well as monthly balance sheets for businesses. Bullet points and numbers are available for lists or outlines. With Microsoft Word a user can now enter algebraic equations into text.

Users can do mathematics with Microsoft Word. Certain fractions; the half, quarter and tenth actually look like fractions now with this software. Languages have been added to Word to enable students to do foreign language homework and enable other users to create, save and print documents with words that are not English in them.

A thesaurus and a lookup are features that are available on Microsoft Word. Other features include things such as "Find and Replace." Indentation of paragraphs, word count and a watermark are all features that can be found when using Word. Inserting hyperlinks, page breaks, headers and footers are also a part of Microsoft Word.

The latest version of Word is 2010, although a lot of people are still using Microsoft Word 2007. The reason for this is that most operating systems are still compatible with 2007. Word can be found as a standalone software or in the Office Suite that is available at most retailers. Trial versions can be found online. These trials last for approximately 60 days; after that the user is given the option to buy the software.
