What is Required for Pet Sitting?
Pet sitting can be a lucrative business for those willing to take it on. However, there are certain requirements that need to be met in terms of insurance. Also, pet sitters who intend to use their own home need to be willing to acquire essential items and 'proof' their home against the animals they intend to look after.
Pet sitting can be something done by both amateurs and professionals. Some people have managed to earn a successful living by a combination of pet sitting, dog walking, and house sitting.
Pet sitting is generally done in one of three locations; the owner's home, the pet sitter's home, or a 'pet daycare', often a storefront operation. If it is done in the owner's home, then the sitter generally needs no special equipment, as the owner should provide it all.
If, however, the sitter is using their own home, then there are certain requirements in terms of equipment. Although the owner will generally bring or send the animal over with its collar, leash if a dog, food bowls, etc, the sitter needs to ensure their home is properly 'proofed' for the animals being looked after. For example, horizontal blinds should be replaced by vertical ones if cats are going to be accommodated. Having feed and water bowls, leashes and the like handy is useful if something is forgotten. Toys and brushes are also a good idea. Check with the owner before giving treats. Ideally, any treats should also be provided by the owner. A toddler gate can be handy to confine dogs to a specific area, and most daycares have a run. Toddler gates will not hold cats. Cat furniture is a good idea, not just scratching posts, but actual furniture with places for cats to sleep and curl up.
Regardless of the situation, all pet sitters should have liability insurance that covers them if something happens to an animal in their care or if a dog, they are walking bites somebody. They should also make sure that they know what the owner's wishes are in the event of a veterinary emergency. Pet sitters should also know basic first aid for the animals they are looking after.
