About Western Riding Lessons

What is Taught in Horse Riding Lessons?

Whether you are considering horseback riding for the first time or wish to continue with formal training, obtaining horse riding lessons ensures that you understand the full concept of this sport. There are different aspects that are involved within these lessons, each of which prepare you to become an educated rider.

One of the first things that are taught in horse riding lessons is the task of catching a horse and haltering it. You will learn how to lead the horse, including the specific positions you should be in when walking with the horse. For instance, you should always stand on the left side of the horse, right above the shoulder and beside the head. When holding the rope, you should hold the rope under the chin and make sure that you also have a grasp of the remainder of the rope.

Other topics that are taught in horse riding lessons include the proper way to groom a horse, including the types of tools to use. You will also learn how to put the saddle on the horse and how to adjust it for a proper fit. When getting on the horse, you will also learn that you must come up from the left side of the horse.

When actually riding the horse, you will learn the different techniques of how to turn left or right, as well as the techniques used to stop the horse and speed the horse up. It is always important to remember that no matter what happens, even in an emergency, you should not raise your voice at the horse, as this can startle it and cause it to run uncontrollably. Once you become familiar with the basic concepts of riding the horse, you will then learn the proper way to get off of, or dismount, the horse.
