What is a Car Radiator?

Mechanics are paid well for the things they can do and the things that they know about vehicles. Even though the average person driving a car is not a mechanic, some of that knowledge still needs to be present. Being able to drive is a responsibility on its own, knowing a bit about the car being driven is a greater asset.

Almost every engine on the market today is an internal combustion engine. Somehow, the engine should be cooled without shutting it off. There are fluids and fans that comprise the cooling affect that happens when the engine is running. One of the main parts of the cooling process is the car radiator.

The coolant in a vehicle is held in a reserve tank. This coolant travels the length of the car and back again collecting heat from all the various pieces and parts. The car radiator collects the coolant, takes the heat from it and releases the heat into the atmosphere.

Most radiators today are made with aluminum. The basic make-up of a radiator deals with quite a few metal tubes and things that are known as fins. There are a couple of different types of radiators for vehicles; it is always best to check the make and model of a vehicle before buying a radiator replacement.  Although radiators do not need regular replacement like an oil change, it is a good idea to check the fluid levels of coolant.

There is the down-flow radiator and the cross-flow radiator. The type used in a vehicle depends on the make and model of it; and sometimes the year. The pressure cap of a radiator is what heightens the coolants boiling point. This enables a vehicle to run smoothly and not overheat for a longer period of time. This means that driving 300 miles in one day will not overheat a healthy vehicle.

As with all vehicles and their parts the best way to keep up with the functions of it is regular maintenance. Mechanics call this preventative maintenance because keeping up with fluid levels and oil changes will help a car run smoother, longer and easier. Knowing a little about the car being driven and taking care of it are boons for any driver.
