What is the Chicken Dance?
Are you looking for a dance that makes everyone look ridiculous out on the dance floor? Do you have two left feet and want to join in on the fun? If this is the case, the chicken dance is exactly what you need to have you out there enjoying yourself with your friends. Everyone loves to get in on the fun and all ages will jump right in.
The Chicken Dance is one that anyone can participate in, even the worst dancer in the building. This song, written by Werner Thomas back in the 1950s, did not gain widespread popularity until decades later, but is now a party favorite anywhere. The steps are very simple and the whole goal is to keep up with the beat of the music as it gets faster the further into the song you get.
When the music first starts, you will need to make a chicken beak using your hands. During the opening four beats of the music, open and close your hands four times. Next, you will need to move your arms to resemble chicken wings. Flap them up and down four times with the beat of the music. The third step is to make tail feathers using your arms and hands. Over the next four beats, you will wiggle in a downward motion. As you come back up over the next four beats of the song, clap your hands following the beat. Repeat the dance sequence four times.
During the bridge of the song, you will have a number of versions to choose from. Many choose to stretch their arms straight out and spin around the room like an airplane in mid-flight. Others prefer to grab a partner and polka. A third version has two people linking arms. Once the arms are linked, the partners will turn eight steps to the right, switch arms and turn eight steps to the left. Whichever version is chosen, the steps should be repeated until the bridge comes to an end.
As the song progresses, the music becomes faster and faster. Dancers may be hard pressed to keep up. This is where the fun comes in as everyone gets a laugh out of the movements people are making. Enjoy this dance at your next party!
