What to Use for RV Roof Sealant
Time, weather, and travel are rough on the RV roof. To protect your RV's roof, you should do routine maintenance and reseal the most vulnerable parts of the roof. You should focus on the roof's edges and all openings through the roof and any exposed screws.
You will need to know the type of roof on your RV so you can choose the proper sealant. Each sealant has distinct directions and it is important to follow the directions exactly so you get a good seal on your RV's roof. The four main types of RV roofs: Metal, EPDM Rubber, Fiberglass, and TPO Rubber. Unfortunately, not all sealants will work on every roof. Purchase sealants in either tubes or brush-on and look to see the word flexible on the label. You may also consider a self-leveling sealer. The following sealants will help narrow down your search for the best sealant for your RV's roof:
- Use EPDM Rubber Roof Lap sealant on EPDM rubber roofs, aluminum and galvanized metal.
- Do not use Dyco C-10 Flow Seal Caulk on EPDM roofs.
- Use M-1 sealant on metals, vinyl, fiberglass and EPDM. If used on TPO roofs, you must prime the roof with TPO Prime.
- For a fiberglass roof, use SB-140 High Performance Butyl Rubber sealant.
Although the above list is not complete, it will be a good starting point for your sealant search. Remember, the key to a good seal for your RV's roof is to use the correct sealant for it.
