When to Plant Hollyhock Seeds

When to Grow Hollyhock Seeds

There is much debate as to when is the appropriate time to plant hollyhock seeds. While some say that spring is the best time and others will argue that the summer is, technically both of these answers are wrong because the hollyhock plant has to establish a root system before it will grow.

Hollyhock seeds need to establish a root system before they will begin to sprout and flourish. Because of this, if you want them to bloom in the summer time, it is best that they be planted in the fall so that they have time to establish their root system that they need to thrive. During the spring time, the stock and leaves will begin to sprout and buds will start to form. The flowers will begin to bloom in the early summer.

It is important to keep your hollyhock seeds watered well during the spring and summer months. This will ensure that the plant will not die off during the winter months. Unlike most other plants that go dormant during the spring and summer time, hollyhocks are still thriving and green all throughout the year. Until the summer comes and the weather warms up again, the plants will be without flowers.

For those that like to increase their garden size, spring planting is ideal because you can watch your plants grow and will be able to place them in their permanent home where they will spend the rest of their life. While there will be no flowers the year that you plant them if you choose to plant in spring, the following year, there will more ample stocks and the plant will have increased in size producing more flowers.
