When to Start Preparing for Long Distance Moving

A long distance move is a consuming process. The earlier you start, the better off you will be in the end. It is important to give yourself at least six to eight weeks to prepare; although, that is not to say that you need to start packing boxes right away. There are other primary, preparatory steps that you can take that will smooth the path and transition from your current location to your new.

Six to Eight Weeks Before the Move: Organization

Make a checklist of everything you need to accomplish before you leave. This is as big as deciding how you are going to move (i.e. pack everything into your car, hire a full service mover, or anything in between). Figure out who you need to notify about the move (i.e. the electric company, other billing companies, friends or family, post office etc). Create a list of favorite places and local people you need to say goodbye to.

You should also make a list of the bigger needs that will await you on the other end of your move. Being looking into your new neighborhood for local restaurants, grocery stores and other places your enjoy for an easy transition.

Four to Six Weeks Before the Move: Accomplishment of Bigger Tasks

By now you should have all the things you need to accomplish lined out and have hopefully begun the process of checking the bigger items off your list. Book your moving company, in whatever capacity you have chosen.

Now is also a good time to start sorting through the things that you have in your home. Are you bringing all of your possessions with you? Is the move a good excuse to downsize and get rid of items that you rarely use. Prepare boxes of items you would like to donate, or starting planning a yard sale of items you do not want to bring with you to your new home.

Two to Four Weeks Before the Move: Finish Your To-do List

The final few weeks of will have heightened stress, emotion and general chaos. It is best to accomplish the details of your move beforehand. Now is the time to start packing up your belongings, leaving out only basic daily needs (i.e. kitchen items for each member of the family, places to sleep, towels and bathing necessities, etc.).

Make sure to plan your transportation to your new location. Will you be driving and need hotel reservations? Is your new home going to be completely ready, or do you need to find a storage facility?

The Final Two Weeks

Say your goodbyes and pack your final belongings in the last few days. Give yourself plenty of time to unwind and rest in between. Eat one last meal at your favorite local restaurant and be on your way!
